    Biomass

The word biomass is the abbreviation of biological mass. Biomass is organic material from vegetable or animal sources, including residues and organic wastes, that can be taken advantage of for energy.
Normally the term biomass is used referring to biomass energy, meaning the energetic fuel that is obtained directly or indirectly from biological sources. Therefore, this is a fuel from biological, natural origins that is totally environmentally friendly and has a lower cost than any other type of fossil fuel like petrol or gas.

Amongst the most traditional uses of biomass, the most well-known is the use of logs in homes, but there are many types of biomasses; in the Iberian Peninsula we have a large amount of biomass, the shells from dried fruits or stones from olives are excellent fuels, also branches from forest clearing, the remains from pruning or even the remains from industrial processes like sawdust. In many cases we can find these products processed in pellet form.

Pellets are pressed sawdust or other biomasses, that look the same as grain feed and are about 6 mm in size. They have a very high calorific power and leave very little ash during combustion. Their uniformity means they can be treated practically like a fluid and they can therefore be transported and unloaded very easily.
Countries like Germany and Austria have been using biomass to supply heating systems and sanitary hot water for over 30 years. That's why they developed the technology for boilers and heaters until they achieved products that are totally automatic and with efficiencies of over 90%.

Biomass allows for a saving in fuel costs, as it is cheaper than other fuels like gas oil or propane gas, it is subject to the cycles of nature and therefore it is inexhaustible. It is clean and automatic, it generates minimum waste and is very comfortable for the end user. It prevents the dependence on exterior energy, being self-sufficient with the biomass that is produced in the Peninsula.
The use of biomass reduces the emissions of green house effect gasses as there is no sulphur emission and the CO2 that is freed in combustion is the same that the biomass absorbs during growth.
